Can we compare Kuzmenko to Calder Winners Petterson and Bure?

When it comes to young NHL players making a big impact, few names stand out more than Elias Petterson, Pavel Bure, and Andrei Kuzmenko. All three players have been impressive in their own right, but how do they compare to one another?

Elias Petterson burst onto the NHL scene in the 2018-19 season, scoring 28 goals and adding 38 assists for a total of 66 points in just 71 games. This outstanding performance earned him the Calder Trophy as the NHL’s rookie of the year. At just 24 years old, Petterson has already established himself as a top scorer in the league, with a career total of 130 goals and 179 assists for 309 points in 312 games.

Pavel Bure’s rookie season was delayed due to a contract dispute, but he still managed to make a big impact in his first year with the Vancouver Canucks. In just 65 games, Bure scored 34 goals and added 26 assists for a total of 60 points. He was also named to the NHL All-Rookie Team. Bure’s career spanned 12 seasons, during which he scored an impressive 437 goals and added 342 assists for a total of 779 points in 702 games. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2012.

Andrei Kuzmenko is the most recent addition to the Vancouver Canucks and has made a big impression in his rookie season. Despite going undrafted, Kuzmenko was signed to a one-year, entry-level contract with the Canucks in the offseason of 2022. In just 65 games, he has scored 33 goals and added 27 assists for a total of 60 points, with 26 of those points coming on the powerplay. While it’s too early to say where Kuzmenko’s career will take him, he has already shown that he has the potential to be a top scorer in the NHL.

When comparing these three players, it’s clear that all of them have the potential to be elite scorers in the NHL. Petterson has already established himself as one of the league’s top young talents, while Bure’s impressive career speaks for itself. Kuzmenko is still early in his NHL journey, but his rookie season has been nothing short of outstanding.

One area where Petterson stands out is in his playmaking ability. While all three players are known for their scoring prowess, Petterson’s 96 career assists show that he’s just as comfortable setting up his teammates as he is putting the puck in the net himself. Bure, on the other hand, was known for his incredible speed and goal-scoring ability, while Kuzmenko has shown a knack for finding the back of the net on the powerplay.

Ultimately, it’s difficult to compare these players directly since they played in different eras and under different circumstances. However, one thing is clear: all three have made a big impact in their rookie seasons and have the potential to be top scorers in the NHL for years to come. It will be exciting to see where their careers take them.
