CFL Review: Elks Close in on New Record

Going to try something a little different this week.  I am going to review the games the day after.  Let’s see how this goes.  Well, our 1st game of the week looked like it was going to be the biggest snore fest of the week.  We had the Hamilton Ticats heading into Edmonton.  The Elks have lost 19 straight home games, CFL record and one behind the all-time record for all sports teams.  The 1st half of this game lived up to the hype of being boring.   The visiting Ticats took a slim 10 to 6 lead into the locker room.  Edmonton came out of the blocks looking like a team with some fire, the 1st kick off of the game was fumbled by the Ticats and Edmonton had the ball at Ticats 36-yard line.  That was pretty much the end of the good things for the Elks in this game.  I have seen some pretty bad team of my 55 plus years of watching the CFL but truthfully, I have never seen a team that finds new ways to screw up things. I am not going to nit pick all the stupid plays I saw (I don’t have all day to type this out, Jake wants it ASAP) I will say the worse had to be Cornelius trying to toss a left-handed pass as he was being taken down which resulted in a pick 6.  You could see the entire team shoulders sink as that happened. Cornelius should have just tucked that one and taken the sack, they were still in the game at that point.  You could literally see the air come out of tires of each Elks player after that play. Hamilton came out of for the 3rd quarter and scored 24 pts.  Adding FG in the 4th to take 37 29 win.

The Elks are now tied for the worse home record in ALL OF PRO SPORTS!

Think about that for a second. This streak has lasted 1371 days, 3 head coaches 2 general managers, and 2 team presidents. What I find unreal is no one has been fired as of 4:00 PM MDT July 14th.  I get the reality with the new coach’s salary cap makes it lot more difficult to replace Chris Jones, if I was a fan of the Elks I would be upset that not only is no one being held accountable, the team is not doing anything to stop the ship from sinking.  There ahs been no trades, no significant signings, NOTHING. All I have heard from Edmonton is the coach saying we are sorry and the owner saying Jones is in his 2nd year of his 4-year contract.  Sorry not good enough Elks. They need to turn this once proud franchise around and they need to do fast.  The League needs Edmonton to be drawing the 35k to 40k in attendance.

How long before they win a home game? That is the million-dollar question.

The schedule isn’t friendly to the Elks wither. Their next 3 games are at Winnipeg then home against BC and Winnipeg.   This could be a long extended losing streak for the Elks.  As for the Ticats, they improve to 2 -3 and stay close to Montreal for 2nd place. On the downside, the Ticats lost another QB is last night game with Shiltz going down in the 2nd half and as of writing this I haven’t heard if how long he will be out.   With Bo Levi on the sidelines with a lower body injury, they had to rely on the 3rd string QB Taylor Powell to finish the game.  He looked pretty coming in cold and throwing a 30 yarder for a TD.   Going to be a bust week in Hamilton as they scramble to see who will take over a QB and back up as they get ready to take on the very rested Toronto Argos next week.   Well time to get ready for some Friday night football as the Argos head to Montreal.  This should be a good game.

  1. The headline: “THE ELKS ARE NOW TIED FOR THE WORSE HOME RECORD IN ALL OF PRO SPORTS! ” should say WORST not WORSE
