Double Header Saturday Night Football

Winnipeg was favoured in this one and was supposed to come in and dominate the Redblacks. In the 1st half, looking at the scoreboard they were just doing that. They took an 18 to 3 lead into halftime. Winnipeg added another 7 pts in the third as Collaros tallied his 3rd touchdown of the game, and Ottawa’s kicker Lewis Ward added his 2nd field goal of the game to give Winnipeg a 26-6 lead heading into the 4th quarter. Ward added 3pts on a 22-yard FG at the 15-minute mark to bring the score to 26 to 9. With 2:38 left in the game Brandin Danridge pick off Collaros at Winnipeg’s 25 yards line and took it into the end zone for Ottawa’s 1st TD of the game, they were also successful in their 2 pt conversion attempt. Now down by 7 The RedBlacks need to rely on their defence to stop Collaros and the Bombers’ offense. The Bombers had just over 2 minutes to kill to seal a victory, and it looked like they were going to be successful in killing the clock when Collaros dropped back and nailed Schoen for the 1st down at Winnipeg’s 50-yard line. Ottawa’s defense stepped up and stopped 2 run plays for short yardage and Winnipeg was forced to kick it away with 1:06 left. Ottawa took over on their own 16-yard line with less than a minute to drive the field. 6 quick passes set up Ottawa on the Bombers’ 12-yard line with 09 seconds left in the game. Talk about a little pressure on Ottawa’s rookie QB Dustin Crum, but he took the pressure and ran it in for the TD. All that was left to tie this game was a 2nd 2 pt conversion……. and with zero seconds left they tied it up! What a comeback. Winnipeg took the ball 1st and managed to kick a successful FG. Now it was up to The Redblacks to answer back. On 2nd and 4 Crum once again took off from the 29-yard line making numerous bombers miss and walking into the endzone for the winning TD. I really wished I could have watched this live and seen the Smurf Mafia lose their collective minds. Ottawa climbs to 2 and 3 while the Bombers drop to 4 and 2.   This is what the CFL is all about, on any given day any team can win.

Game 4 Calgary at Saskatchewan

This is the one game I really wanted to watch as I had mentioned in previous articles these two teams are closer than their records show. Both teams really needed a win but truthfully if Calgary loses this one, I would hate to be in the Stamps offices come Monday Morning. Calgary showed how badly they wanted it taking a 20 -10 lead into halftime getting scoring from 2 TD and Paredes kicking two field goals. The Riders got their 10 points off a 66-yard Punt return for a TD by Mario Alford in the 1st and a 36-yard FG by Bret Lauther. Alford would up his stats with a 94 Yard punt return in the 3rd to bring the Riders within three heading into the 4th. At 9:25 left in the 4th Saskatchewan QB Trevor Harris went down, reported later as a tibial plateau fracture of his right knee. There was no scoring in the 4th until Dedrick Mills pushed it in from the 1-yard line to put the Stamps back up by 10 with 6:49 left. With Mason Fine in to replace Harris the riders Jamal Morrow scored a TD with 2:45 left in the game, to bring it back to a 3 pt game. Then with 1:36 left Rene Paredes kicked a 34-yard FG to put the Stamps ahead by 6. Mason Fine had a long way to go taking the ball at his own 29-yard line and 1:31 left. Fine completed 10 yarder to Watson for a first down at their own 39-yard line. After two consecutive sacks the Riders were faced with 3rd and 23, Fine steps back and unleashed a hail Mary which bounces off a stampeder and into the hands of Riders receiver Tevin Jones at the 10-yard line and he ran it in for what looked like a game-winning TD. Lauther put thru the extra point to put Saskatchewan ahead by 1 with 36 seconds left on the clock. Jake Maier was able to move the ball just inside the 50-yard line. Enter Rene Paredes, whose longest of his career is 53 yards. With zeros on the clock, Paredes sails it thru the uprights, to secure the Stamps’ 2nd win of the season (2-3) and drop the Riders to 3-2.

These two games are what the CFL is all about, it is not over till there are zeros on the clock. I will be putting out the article with my prediction early this week, hopefully, week 7 is as exciting as week 6 was!
