Despite their best efforts to bring in new investors and hire experienced managers, the Vancouver Canucks have been stuck in a rut of mediocrity. It’s becoming more and more obvious that the only way to change things for the better is by changing ownership.
As much as additional investors and experienced personnel can help, these measures may not be enough to address the deep-seated issues stemming from the current ownership group. The Aquilini family’s lack of investment in player development and acquisition, poor management decisions, and controversies surrounding the way they’ve treated their employees have all contributed to the team’s struggles.
What the Vancouver Canucks really need is a fresh ownership group that is fully committed to building a winning team on the ice while running a fair and just organization off the ice. This new ownership group should have a clear plan for how they will build a competitive team over the long term and be willing to invest the resources required to achieve this goal.
Other NHL teams, like the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Tampa Bay Lightning, offer some great examples of successful ownership groups that the Vancouver Canucks can learn from. These teams have consistently been able to compete at the highest levels in recent years, in part due to smart ownership and management decisions.
It’s crystal clear that a change in ownership is the only way to get the Vancouver Canucks back on track. As fans, we all deserve a team that competes at the highest level and an ownership group that’s passionate about making that happen. It’s time for the Aquilini family to pass the torch and let a new group take the lead.
