Thatcher Demko Trade Rumors…

Well, here we are the year is 2023, and yet again the Vancouver Canucks have rumors about trading a goalie. This time we don’t have a goalie controversy, like that makes any difference.

Demko, slumped hard to start the year with only 3 wins in 15 starts and a poor 88.3% save percentage. Needless to say, it was a tough start for the goalie who wanted to “reach new level(s)” but for a team who is 27th in the standings but is top 10 in goals for this year trading an all-star goalie is asinine. And, that’s from the person who says trade everyone who can get value out of.

Let’s look back in time, the year is 2020 and Jacob Markstrom is arguably having a Vezina candidate season when the season is shut down for “Only 2 weeks” due to Covid, we now know how that turned out. When the bubble playoffs started and the Canucks looked great, Bo Horvat puts the team on his back and Markstrom went lights out in the games he started. Posting an 8-6 win line with only 2.85 GAA and an insane 919 save percentage!

Then in the August 30th game, the worst-case scenario happened, which Canucks fans by now are used to 50+ years of “Canucks Luck. It was now “Demko Time”, and he came in and played his heart out in the three games he played against the top team VGK put u[ a 984 save percentage and only .67 GAA. and yet the Canucks still couldn’t get passed the Big Bad Golden Showers.

It was at this point the Canucks fans knew they had their dream scenario, Markstrom and Demko, 1A vs 1B, Roberto Luongo vs Corey Schnieder part 2, but instead, Jim Benning “Ran out of time” and ran out of money in signing Markstrom, who crossed the Border to Alberta and signed a Six year, $36,000,000 contract with the Flames! We knew it was Demko’s time he showed he could, and we avoided controversy for the time, but Thatcher won the hearts of Management and the Fanbase with a .915 Save percentage and 2.85 GAA the following year and a 9.15 save percentage and a 2.72 GAA last year.

Now we get to 2022-23, the season has not gone well, and Demko hasn’t played well but if we plan on trading our #1 Goalie who has been #1 for 2 years and a top-end goalie at that, this “re-tool” is going to take longer than 2-3 years and Management needs to let us, the fans know.
