Inclusive or Divisive? NHL’s Elimination of Themed Jerseys

Gary Bettman looking angry at the Canucks 2023 Pride Jersey and outraged Canucks Fans

NHL’s Elimination of Themed Jerseys Sparks Debate

In a recent exclusive interview with Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman after the NHL’s Board of Governors meeting, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman announced a significant change in the league’s approach to themed jerseys during warmups for special nights, including Pride Nights. Teams will no longer wear themed jerseys during warmups for these occasions.

During the interview, Friedman raised valid concerns about individuals feeling comfortable in their own skin, especially considering that this decision was made during Pride month. Bettman acknowledged these concerns but emphasized the need to refocus on the causes being celebrated. The goal is to ensure that the emphasis and efforts on these various causes are not overshadowed by distractions.

Bettman reassured fans that Pride nights and other special nights will still be observed by NHL clubs. The change is solely related to the elimination of jersey changes for warmups. This way the purpose of these events can remain at the forefront, allowing for a more unified and concentrated message. It’s worth noting that despite the decision, Pride jerseys will still be designed and sold. Players who choose to model them are free to do so.

My Opinion

As a fan of the NHL, I worry about the comfort and inclusivity of individuals within the game. Pride nights hold special significance for the LGBTQ+ community, and wearing Pride-themed jerseys during warmups can be a visible show of support and solidarity. By eliminating the jersey changes, there might be a sense of diminished representation and recognition for these important causes.

Ultimately, NHL’s Elimination of Themed Jerseys is detrimental to the leagues inclusivity and is a new position from the league. Gary Bettman and the NHL allowed outside forces ideology into the league. Hate wins this time with the help of politics and the commissioner of the NHL. The sad part is I’ve seen many people celebrating the backwards movement from a league that is years behind others.
